Do you want more for yourself, your family, and other people with developmental disabilities? This 10-month series hosted by The Arc of King County will give you the skills and knowledge to speak up and make a difference.Your commitment: 10 Saturdays, a trip to Olympia, in-class and at-home learning, and one community project. Learning is hands-on and fun! We will provide lunch and snacks.
Classes will take place 9 am to 3 pm at The Arc of King County, 233 6th Avenue N, Seattle, WA 98109. Bus stops are nearby and there is parking on site, as well as paid street parking.
What you will learn:
- SEPTEMBER 8 – Kick-off retreat: Building community and exploring leadership styles
- OCTOBER 6 – Defining a meaningful life
- NOVEMBER 10 – Understanding the safety net we have
- DECEMBER 15 - Disability and the civil rights movement
- JANUARY 12 – How public policy is made
- FEBRUARY 9 - Advocacy strategies
- MARCH 9 - Disability pride
- APRIL 6 – The school system
- MAY 4 – Advocacy in action: Using data to tackle community problems
- JUNE 8 – Gallery walk and graduation!
You will also learn key communication and presentation skills, experience the state legislature in action, and get support to complete a project that helps your community. Oh – and did we mention make friends?
All classes are on Saturdays, 9 am to 3 pm. The trip to Olympia is still to be determined but will likely fall on a Wednesday during the state legislative session (mid January to early April). There may be several dates to choose from.
Individuals with developmental disabilities and family members of people with DD are encouraged to apply. Friends and allies will be considered on a space-available basis.
You can apply on your own, or recruit a friend for family member to apply with you. This class is designed for older teenagers and adults.
Applications are due August 20.
Space is limited and applicants MUST APPLY to be considered. We ask applicants to commit to the entire series.
